Day of the Dead known as, “El Dia de los Muertos”, is one of the most celebrated holidays in Mexico and central America.
This holiday is observed on November 1st and 2nd to celebrate and remember those who have passed away.
On November 1st, babies and kids who passed away are typically celebrated to honor their souls. Then on November 2nd, all people and even pets are celebrated.
Dia de los Muertos was first celebrated by the Aztecs, who believed that when one has passed away, their soul travels to a place called “Chicuna Mictlan”.
They believed that souls travel for 7 years until final resting. During these years, the Aztects provided the deceased with food and tools for their journey.
Nowadays, Dia de los Muertos is celebrated similar to how the Aztects used to celebrate.
It is believed that the spirit world and human world borders are torn down so the souls of the dead awaken to reunite with their living family.
During this time, people set up altars known as “ofrendas”, which contain their loved ones favorite food, drinks, flowers, candles and pictures of them.
Lastly, big parades are made in the streets to honor the souls which include colorful skulls, dancing, singing, celebration and remembrance.
