Coaches

The head coach is Jenn. Coach Jenn has been coaching for five years. She brings a lifelong passion for flag football, having played for 15 years. She is a proud Costa Mesa resident; she is married to Coach Austin and a mother of two. Coach Austin is the offensive coordinator/quarterback coach. What he brings to the team is firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the position to the Costa Mesa High School girls’ flag football program. Members on the Team

I interviewed some of the players on the team, and here’s what they had to say.

9th grader Venessa Hernandez’s: “I enjoy the new friendships and people you meet, especially because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t know who those people are. I’d say the biggest challenge for me was getting familiar with the plays, especially being new to the sport and not really knowing what I was doing, but I am so thankful I had teammates who showed me and told me what to do. For me I personally had choir and had a performance during the season, but my coach and teacher figured a way to make it work with practices and games. Academics weren’t as hard, just had to really stay focused on doing homework and making sure I wasn’t failing behind.”

“I would recommend it to girls that have an interest because its a fun sport and just trying it out shows dedication that its something you would like to play and the coaches are so nice and understanding. There just needs to be communication if something is going on, everyone is so encouraging and they help you when they see you struggling”.

9th grader Catalina Leffler responded: “I enjoy the games along with the connections I’ve made throughout the season. Some people don’t look at at flag and wouldn’t consider it a real sport, but it contains just as much athletic ability as any other sport maybe even more. It’s really like any other sport, where you would have to find time and balance out homework and your activities with the sport. It’s definitely a challenge when you first start but if you continue to pursue flag, you get the hang of it. It is actually a lot of fun with all your teammates cheering you on from the side lines. I would definitely recommend joining.”

Flag football is also one of the world’s fastest growing sports, as it’s for everyone to play but also in a way for women to participate in football. Its played in more than 100 countries by people of all ages!
