From the cool summer waves to the crisp autumn breeze, the change in seasons bring new colors, new routines, and many new experiences to explore. Leaving summer behind may not be as exciting to many, though fall also brings many fun things to look forward to!
Activities
Summer is all about late night swims, beach bonfires, and all those evenings admiring the sunsets. Though, as the days become shorter, and the air begins to cool, fall slowly takes its place. As we think of fall, we often picture the endless activities that make the season unforgettable. Here are several activities that can be considered:

- Visit a Pumpkin Patch: Pick out pumpkins and take tractor rides at spots like Tanaka Farms in Irvine.
- Explore Nature Trails: Go on a cool-weather hike at local spots like Santiago Oaks Regional Park or Upper Newport Bay to enjoy the crisp air.
- Attend Fall Festivals: Check out seasonal community events like the Irvine Global Village Festival or local harvest fairs.
- Apple Picking: Harvesting fresh apples at local orchards.
- Movie Nights: Host a cozy movie marathon featuring classic autumn or Halloween films.
- Bake Fall Treats: Make seasonal desserts like apple pie, pumpkin bread, or cinnamon rolls.
house decor
As we leap into fall, we swap out the light summer linens for warm, cozy, knit throws. We shift from citrus, fruity, tropical smells and bounce into new candle scents, such as cinnamon, amber, pumpkin spice, etc., to create a softer, gloomy atmosphere as the afternoons get shorter. Here’s a list of other fall-themed house decor to bring a touch of autumn into your home:
- Decorative Pumpkins: Place small pumpkins and gourds around tables, shelves, or your front porch.
- Autumn Wreaths: Hang a fall-themed wreath on your front door to add a seasonal touch.
- Fall Centerpieces: Use dried flowers, leaves, pinecones, or small pumpkins, to create an autumn centerpiece for your dining or coffee table.
- Warm Colors: Bring in shades of burnt orange, brown, cream, burgundy, and mustard through pillows, rugs, etc.
- Seasonal Wall Art: Switch out summer prints for artwork featuring fall leaves, pumpkins, or autumn landscapes.
fashion
Adjusting our wardrobes for the weather is also an important detail when switching seasons. As temperatures begin to drop, we trade in our summer clothes for warmer layers and fall colors. From t-shirts and shorts to sweaters and jeans, there are many ways to transition your autumn wardrobe. Here are some fall fashion ideas to try this season:
- Sweaters: Swap out lightweight tank tops for cozy sweaters, cardigans, and crewnecks.
- Jeans: Trade in shorts for jeans, cargos, sweats, leggings, or any other longer pants.
- Boots: Switch from sandals and flip flops to sneakers, ankle boots, loafers, or other closed-toe shoes.
- Accessories: Add scarves, beanies, belts, or simple jewelry to complete a fall look.
Traditional Foods
Moving into fall, we browse into the several variations of yummy home cooked meals that are often presented through holidays. For example, during thanksgiving, the main course is usually a juicy oven baked turkey, or sweet potato/corn salad. There’s also a variety of hearty soups to choose from (chicken soup, tomato basil, beef stew, etc.). Other meals that may satisfy your cravings during autumn include:
- Casseroles & Pot Pies: chicken or turkey pot pies and baked casseroles provide heavy, warming comfort.
- Roasts: Slow-cooked pot roasts paired with root vegetables are seasonal staples.
- Baked Goods: Apple cider donuts, cinnamon rolls, and pumpkin bread paired with morning coffee.
- Caramel Apples: Crisp apples coated in warm caramel are a classic autumn snack.
- Warm Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves define the flavor profile of autumn treats.
Although summer memories may be hard to leave behind, the arrival of fall gives us plenty of reasons to look forward to what comes next. The cooler weather, changing scenery, seasonal traditions, and comforting food create a different atmosphere that makes this time of year special. Whether it’s spending time outdoors, enjoying cozy nights at home, or celebrating with family and friends, fall offers something for everyone. Embracing these simple changes can make the transition into a new season something to enjoy rather than something to miss.
