AI has developed a lot throughout the last few years, including in the classroom. Although AI is not banned in schools, some uses of it are frowned upon by teachers and administrators. But, on the other hand, many teachers and students use AI to teach or learn new subjects.
Now the most popular AI that is used throughout the world is ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. These all were coded to basically answer any question you had, and it would give an appropriate and reasonable answer. As of late, most of the users ask them about work- or schoolwork-related questions, such as math equations, word definitions, and science.
Data from the Pew Research Center states that the users that most use the AI tools are young adults (17-28) and Millennials (30-44). Most young adults are in high school or college and use it for educational purposes. While teachers are mostly in that age gap of millennials, they use it for professional tasks and teaching purposes.
Here at Costa Mesa, many people use AI, like teachers and students, so I interviewed some to see how they use it:
A teacher here at Costa Mesa, Mrs. Orduna, also has an opinion on AI, “Me personally, I don’t use AI as much, but I do use it to help with my math lessons and to make my slides and presentations prettier. Although I don’t use it as much, I do think that students should for sure learn how to use AI responsibly to learn and help them with schoolwork and subjects, and schools should allow them to since I think it enhances their learning.”
Avery Karlin, a student here at Costa Mesa, stated, “I do use AI, but I make sure to use it responsibly. It is helpful to check if my answers are right and to study for a test.”
Another student, Charlie Kash, claimed, “I use AI, but not so much for answers or for cheating as I use it when I have writer’s block and use it for ideas on how to word or do certain assignments.”
AI can be good and bad for classwork, as some schools and administrations restrict the use of AI or don’t like it, but for some people, AI isn’t just for teaching, as it can be a thing that helps them learn things and helps them understand what they are learning. As long as you use AI responsibly, it could be a good source for finishing or understanding classwork.
