Driverless Cars

Driverless cars have recently been a big hit in different cities around the U.S. Many are found in cities like LA, Phoenix, and San Francisco. These driverless cars are also known as Waymos. Waymos are available for all riders 24/7. They are controlled by an AI system and sensors that can detect their surroundings. Riders can relax and control music while riding to their destination. Riders from ages 14 to 18+ are allowed to ride, but 14-17-year-olds must have a parent account. Anyone under the age of 14 must have a parent or guardian present.

Waymo was founded in 2004 by the founders, Sebastian Thrun and Anthony Levandowski. It was created by Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company. Rides by Waymo became available to the public in October 2020. The company has had over 20 million riders. When the company launched, they raised $2.25 billion from investors. The company has had partnerships with Uber, Volvo, and DoorDash in hopes of making their company accessible to all.

Many people worry about the safety of these cars. They are worried that they aren’t safe because of different factors, such as following traffic laws, and many don’t trust AI with their safety. People believe that Waymos are less safe than human drivers, but that is not completely true. Because of the many sensors and precautions, it keeps people safer than a licensed driver. If Waymo detects a person breaking the rules of their ride, their ride could be stopped and canceled.

Waymo rides can be ordered from Uber depending on your area or the Waymo app. Prices range from about $15 to $25 per trip. Since these rides have no drivers, tips aren’t needed or allowed, lowering the price. Some complain about Ubers and Lyfts costing less money than Waymo’s. Ultimately the price depends on how far away your destination is and the traveling time.

Waymo has had a big impact on cities because of the reduction in human drivers. This has changed how people in big, major cities get from place to place. It has reduced traffic, and parking in these cities, making city life easier for its residents. While Waymos are still not completely trusted by people, it is believed to have a lasting impact.
