Wrapping Up the Yellow Ribbon Week

This week the Costa Mesa Middle and High School has had multiple Yellow Ribbon Week events, such as activities on the Middle School side and dress up events on the High School side. Yellow Ribbon Week isn’t just some event ASB put together (although many of participants are from the ASB), this week is about honoring those who have committed or considered suicide and recognizing the mental health needs of those around us. Mental health is a serious topic that is often ignored or glossed over. Suicide and consideration of suicide is widespread. According to the CDC, almost a quarter of high schoolers since 2020 have seriously considered suicide, and almost 10% make suicidal attempts. Mesa Nation should feel the need to unite not just under a school flag or a football field, but under caring for one another.

The value of Yellow Ribbon Week lies in the effort the students put into others. Removing the stigma of mental health conversations and providing students with legitimate and trustworthy resources to help themselves and one another out should be the largest priority. Seeing others talking about mental health, suicide, or sharing personal struggles will chip away the ice of these kinds of conversations. This kind of awareness requires responsibility, make sure the people who are close to you are actually reaching out for help. The investments from the school are there and counselors and mental health services are prominent in our district, so make sure to refer your friends in need to the proper resources.

You can make a difference by being a safe person with empathy and non-judgmental attitudes. Speak up for your friends and classmates, keep them accountable in sudden changes in behavior or feeling hopeless in their lives. Give them a reason to smile and take care of yourself as well. Break the silence during Yellow Ribbon Week. Mental health is an equal affair, and anyone can be affected. Not just the students, but your family members, staff members, neighbors, teammates, etc. If you are struggling, reach out to others. If you are feeling content with yourself, take the time to support other people who may not have the same level of happiness. Even small amounts of effort help you and other people move forward with life.
