Costa Mesa High School's senior, Jose Toscano, had the opportunity to interview Republican Congressman John Duarte, who was elected to the United States House of Representatives in California's 13th congressional district during the 2022 midterms. Despite a close race with his Democrat opponent, Congressman Duarte emerged victorious with a narrow margin of approximately 564 votes, making it the second closest house race in the entire country during the 2022 election season. This victory was particularly notable as the district had voted for Joe Biden in 2020 by a margin of 11%.
During the interview, Congressman John Duarte discussed various issues affecting the nation, including inflation, which he highlighted as a significant concern for his constituents. He also shared his experience in his first month of congress, detailing his efforts to establish partnerships and work across the aisle to achieve bipartisan solutions to pressing issues.
The congressman also provided insights into his personal background and how it motivated his decision to run for congress despite having no political experience. In this context, he underscored the importance of civic engagement and encouraged students still in high school to consider careers in public service, highlighting the importance of giving back to one's community.
