Why Do We Dream?

Waking up in the middle of a good dream is the worst, isn’t it? But what are dreams, anyway? Do they mean anything?

Dreams are a state of consciousness in which we feel emotion and sensory experiences while we are asleep. Sometimes they can be intense, and other times they can be peaceful and nice.

Believe it or not, our brain is still very active while we are asleep.

The Purpose of Dreams

So, why do we dream? Experts believe that dreaming has many functions, such as to help us process information and emotions, help with memory, show an inner desire for something, and to face an inner conflict the dreamer may have.

When you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense.

But when do we dream? Dreaming occurs during REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement, and this stage of sleep is when our dreams are the most vivid.

Some people believe that dreams are a sign of good sleep, but this isn’t the case. More dreams could actually imply that you’re stressed.

Reasons For Nightmares

We all experience nightmares one time or another, but why do they happen?

Some reasons that nightmares may occur can be due to things such as stress, anxiety, or maybe something you thought about during the day, and it influenced the kind of dream you had.

So, if you watched a scary movie right before bed, there’s a chance you could have nightmares about it. This could happen because horror movies cause more stress for some people.

Not Remembering Dreams

Some people believe that they don’t dream at all, but a lot of the time, they just don’t remember them. And if they do recall their dreams, their memory of them fades quickly. The brain is supposed to make us forget our dreams so we don’t create false memories and mix them up with real ones.
