NMUSD has selected Dr. Wesley Smith as the new superintendent for the district.
Per Estancia High School, Smith has been in California Public Education for 24 years, 13 of which being a site or district leader, and 8 of which as an educator and influencer at the state and federal levels.
Smith is currently an adjunct professor in the doctoral program at the University of Southern California. He has also served as a high school English, English Language Development, and Spanish teacher, as well as a football and baseball coach.
Smith was most recently the executive director of the Association of California School Administrators, the country's biggest umbrella group for school administrators.
He has earned the PTA Golden Oak award in addition to being awarded Educator of the Year by the California Association of Student Councils.
The award is presented to an individual or organization that has made substantial contributions to children's and youth's welfare.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Brigham Young University, a Master of Arts from Claremont Graduate School, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California.
His contract was formally authorized at the NMUSD Board Meeting on September 14, 2021, and he was anticipated to start on October 18, 2021.
