The football season kicked off last Friday night, August 22, with Costa Mesa High School taking on Magnolia High. The crowd was rowdy and excited, and the Mustangs’ energy matched their performance.
Costa Mesa started off hot with star quarterback Andrew Waiss scoring a rushing touchdown. Both Mesa’s offense and defense were unstoppable. Gavin Garza proved it by scoring 4 rushing touchdowns in the first half. To cap off the first half, Rex Tompkins had a crazy kick return touchdown, and Caden Oliver had an amazing catch for the score.
All the momentum was on Mesa’s side, and the fans were pumped about the lead. Costa Mesa was able to prevent Magnolia from scoring for the whole first half of the game, with the halftime score of 49-0.
Costa Mesa kept the lead for the rest of the game. Mustang defense kept Magnolia’s offense from scoring and even got a defensive touchdown by Ryan Lowry with a scoop and score. When the clock hit triple zeros, the final score was 56-0, with Costa Mesa winning the game.
Even though there were some standout plays by certain players, it took the whole team to get the W. After the game, Vance Kirby spoke about the energy during the game. “The energy was amazing, and it matched our performance.” Their next game is the Battle of the Bell game, which is always a great one, so make sure you’re at Mustang Field on August 29th at 7:00pm.
