First Cross Country Race of the Season

On Saturday, September 11th, CMHS had their first cross country race of the season at Laguna Hills High School.

Athletes left CMHS at 5:30 a.m. for their first race of the day at 7:45 a.m., freshman girls.

The course was 3 miles long, including different types of terrain like turf, asphalt, and dirt. There were also two big hills called “Hawk Hill” and “Final Ascent Hill.”

Furthermore, runners had to face 90-degree weather!

“Approaching that big hill, I felt excited but tired,” said Daisy Carrillo, captain of the girl’s cross country team. “I had to really prepare myself mentally for that moment.”

I had to really prepare myself mentally for that moment.”

“When I’m running, what helps me when it gets tough is a line I just repeat to myself which is ‘you might be hurting now, but it’s going to be this short amount of pain to reach your prideful ending,’ and if you ask me, that sounds like a fair trade,” said Carrillo.

The top 40 finishers from each race received a medal.

Seniors Edward Rodriguez, Angeles Alatorre, Daisy Carrillo, Nicole Alvarez, and Ashley Huipe medalled, as well as freshman Lindsey Gomez.

Alatorre and Carrillo also placed in the top 10!

“My favorite part about racing is the feeling you get before, during, and after a race…there’s nothing like that exhilarating feeling,” Carrillo explained.

The next cross country meet is the Woodbridge Invitational located at the Silver Lakes Sports Complex in Norco, CA, on Friday, September 17th.

If you’re looking to support the cross country team without the long drive, there are two home races hosted here at CMHS: one is on Wednesday, October 6th, for the League Cluster Meet, and the other is on Wednesday, November 3rd, for the League Finals Meet, both starting at 3:00 p.m.

Good luck for the rest of the season, Mustangs!
