Senior vs. Freshman Perspective by Chloe Hills and Olive Orris

Olive Orris: As a freshman, I know it can be tough dealing with a packed schedule. In this article, we will be talking about freshman fears while a senior at Mesa, Chloe Hills talks about how she navigated her first years of high school.

Especially when loading your schedule, homework piling up and loads of information can be a big transition. School will start to become really stressful and most people might start to feel like giving up. If you start to give up, things will only get worse and your grades will drop really quickly. Even in the first week of school I have already been conflicted on if I picked the right classes, or if I am already falling behind. To help other freshmen like myself, this article will involve the advice of seniors, to help us all out!!

Chloe Hills: As a senior myself, freshman year feels like forever ago. However, I do remember how scary it was my first couple weeks getting used to my schedule, people, and teachers. Today I will be answering all questions about navigating freshman year, and how to overcome fear and stress.

Olive: “How did you balance school and sports?”

Chloe: “When I was a freshman, I got faced with practice everyday after school, alongside homework and I remember being very stressed out for a good chunk of that year. As time went on, I found it easy for me if I made designated time out of my weekend, as most homework was usually due on Mondays, to do said work, so that it wouldn’t interfere with my sports.”

Olive: “What was one thing that helped you stay motivated during the year?”

Chloe: “Something that helped me, and still helps me stay motivated was, was wanting to have a good GPA. Personally, having good grades makes me feel proud of myself, and less overstimulated than I would be if I had several missing assignments or zeros.”

Olive: “What is the best advice you received as a freshman?”

Chloe: “The best advice I received as a freshman was, ‘You are who you surround yourself with.’ As you go through phases of high school, you will come to realize that drama evolves, and in my opinion, it’s best to stay out of it. You want to choose a group of people that you mesh well with, and avoid surrounding yourself with bad people.”

Olive: “What was your favorite class in your freshman year?”

Chloe: “My favorite class during freshman year was Mrs. Kahawai’s English class!! I feel as though in her class, I had met some of the most amazing people that I still consider my friends to this day!! Her class helped build not only my writing skills, but also my friendships, and gave me a special staff member (Mrs. Kahawai) that I could trust, and talk to.”

Olive: “What is one tip you have for freshmen?”

Chloe: “Looking back, the biggest piece of advice I’d give to a freshman, or the freshman class as a whole, is to enjoy every moment. I was always wishing graduation would come faster, and hating every moment of class, but now as a senior, I wish I enjoyed it more. Of course there will be days where you don’t want to go to school, or people are being rude and you’re upset, but the biggest takeaway from my four years is to find the positive in every moment.”

If you take away one thing from this article, know that freshman stress is something that will go away. As long as you stay on top of all your work, freshman year will be so much easier.
