After another partial government shutdown that began in February 2026, those who plan on going for vacation in Spring Break will be in for a big surprise. With long lines at TSA and the controversial ICE agents now circulating in American airports, this is a Spring Break that will go down in history.
Key Cause of Shutdown
After a long dispute over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, or DHS, that began on February 2026, TSA agents who commonly check in and search passengers before allowing entry have gone without pay. This has caused over 400 highly specialized agents to quit, and others to call out sick as they find ways to make money to supplement their income.
Immigration and Control Enforcement, ICE, is now taking over non-specialized “soft security” tasks at TSA checkpoints, as they are still receiving paychecks.
What It Means for Spring Break
Passengers and travelers report that there are tremendously long lines at the airport, with some people reporting more than 4 hours of just waiting in line to be checked in. These lines often left travelers being late for flights – or worse, missing them entirely. It has been almost 45 days since the government shutdown, and the money owed to TSA workers is estimated to amount to over one billion dollars.
Resolution
Monday, March 30, 2026, following an executive order from President Trump, TSA’s paychecks in certain areas are being reimbursed. The Trump administration has confirmed the money is coming from last year’s Republican tax and spending bill, called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The once long lines have been diminished from 3-4 hour waits to 10-15 minutes. ICE is confirmed staying until airports are back to normal operations, with White House border czar Tom Homan stating, “We’ll be there as long as they need us.”
The shutdown is on-going, however, and there still needs to be a resolution for funding the rest of DHS, which also pays the Coast Guard and federal disaster relief workers.
