The CMHS girls flag football team started last year with only 14 girls and one team. This year, they now have 25 girls with a JV and varsity team. All 4 high schools in the NMUSD school district now have a flag football team, and they all play against each other.
This year’s coach for the CMHS team is Jennifer Izzarell. It is her first year as the head coach. She has been coaching for 3 years but has been playing flag football for 10 years. “I love the game and am passionate about helping young women excel and receive scholarships.” She says that the team practices from 2:30-4 about 2-3 times a week. They have games 2 times a week against different teams in the Golden Empire Conference.
Catalina Leffler is one of the many star players on the team. Catalina has been doing flag football for 2 years and plans on continuing the sport next season. She said, “One of my favorite parts of the sport is being with my teammates and playing in games.” She plays as wide receiver, and rusher.
They have won many games with the help of their coach and encouragement from their captains. The varsity captains are Liby Kotler, Myah Martinez-Rios, and Kana Nellis. The JV captains are Addie Scott, and Alana Watson. The team has had 4 games so far against Portola, Whitney, Los Amigos, and Estancia. Varsity has won 3 games and JV has won 1 game so far this season. The most recent game they had was the Battle of the Bell against Estancia High School, which Varsity won with a score of 26-0 and JV lost with a score of 7-26 .
